![]() ![]() I am still a bit unsure about how in-depth I can go when discussing what is happening with young children, but I think I just need more experience. Spark conversation and encourage your student scientists to share observations and make evidence-based conclusions. I feel slightly more confident about this topic now though because I know when a chemical change is occurring. Directions: Preparation: Copy and cut out sorting strips for the number of class sets needed. This Properties Matter Presentation will engage students to learn and explore the physical and chemical properties of matter. I learnt that chemical properties can only be observed when the chemicals are reacting.īefore we had a lecture about this topic, I was a bit unsure about what exactly we could talk about with children. I think it would be good to do this with young children as well. During the lecture, we had to choose an item and describe its physical properties to our neighbour. I also learnt about using the physical properties to describe matter. This made it really clear for me to understand and I think with young children, a good example could be water. Rena told us a good example of this, when we melt copper, it is still copper, it has only changed shape. A chemical change creates something different and is difficult to reverse whereas in a physical change, the chemicals stay the same and is easy to reverse. A physical property is an aspect of matter that can be observed or measured without changing its chemical composition. In this topic, I learnt the difference between a chemical change and a physical change. I was able to see that there are many opportunities that allow discussion with young children into the states of matter. After seeing the demonstrations that that Rena and Dawn did in the lecture and also the activities they set up in the workshop, I feel more confident in going about this. When I first thought about teaching the states of matter to young children, I was slightly worried because I was unsure of how I would go about doing it. I am glad that this was covered in the lecture, as if I was discussing this with young children, I would have been teaching them wrong. A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. ![]() I also did not know that in a liquid, the particles are still close together, I had thought they were further spaced apart. 3.4: Physical and Chemical Properties is shared under a not declared license and was authored, remixed, and/or curated by LibreTexts. I knew that in liquids the particles were close together and did not move a lot, but I did not know that the particles were in a uniform pattern. I also found out more about the particle movements in these three states of matter that was different to what I thought. ![]() I had always thought that liquid, solid and gasses were the only states of matter, but those three are just the most common. When we learnt about the states of matter, I was surprised to find out that there are not just three. ![]()
